Billy Graziadei
Biohazard: Billy Graziadei (vocals, guitars, piano); Evan Seinfeld (vocals, bass); Bobby Hambel (*) (electric & acoustic guitars); Danny Schuler (drums, percussion); and Rob Echeverria (electric & acoustic guitars).
(* in November 1995 prior to the recording of Mata Leao, Bobby Hambel was replaced in Biohazard by Rob Echeverria).
Biohazard the band formed in 1988 and can be attributed to starting the entire "hip hop metal" craze which popular bands such as "Limp Bizkit" (Fred Dertz), and Rage Against the Machine have made millions trying to duplicate. Biohazard's 1996 Meta Leao and two collaborations with rappers Onyx (remix of "slam") and the title song to the major motion picture "Judgement Night" (1993 Good Times Director: Stephen Hopkins Actors: Stephen Dorff, Emilio Esteves, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Denis Leary) was what kick started the "hip hop metal" formula to become popular again mainstream (however; Run DMC and Aerosmith were the earliest to use a rap/metal collaboration in "Walk this Way" in the 80's).
Biohazard a power metal band from Brooklyn which lyrics take on social issues, current themes, and focus on positive aspects of human life built the upstart band a cult following and a constant tour schedule across the United States, South America, and Europe. The strong cult following led to the band being signed by Roadrunner Records for one CD, until 1992 when Warner Brothers records signed the band to a major recording deal. Biohazard has always been a band with a message that and never caved in to consumer trends, demographics, or marketing strategies.
Interesting note to wrestling fans Biohazard kick started the careers of Teutonic rockers H-Blockx (who wrote and recorded the new theme song for WWF wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin "Oh Hell Yeah,") including them on a nation-wide U.S. Tour.
Interview with Billy Graziadei (vocals, guitars, piano) of Biohazard follows this text.
Parents get upset when their children listen to their music! Even some politicians cringe at their mere existence! But they have gone forward!
Ironically the social message Biohazard mixes with their intense violent sound is one with a positive message to teen agers and young adults. It is socially motivated to get a positive message out to a demographic (metal followers) which usually doesn't have a valid vehicle with much positive involved. Biohazard in a world of misconceptions has been associated with such racism, anarchy, and distorting or outright destroying the American culture. However; this could not be further from the truth. Biohazard has tackled these issues in their music, and written lyrics dispelling the stereotype presented that all "death metal" (Hardcore sounding) bands are racists, anarchists, and or morally corrupt. Biohazard certainly stands on its own, and did not cave in to domestic themes popular with the 'death metal' demographic simply to churn out money making albums one after another. In fact with only 6 CD's to date (with a seventh out soon) and having been touring since 1988. Much thought goes in to each CD compilation.
CJ: I've been a fan of Biohazard's for many years, and out of respect I am going to start this interview off a little differently, and I am going to give you center stage (before asking a question) to send a message to Biohazard's millions of fans.
BG: Here is a part of me....thanx for the support...UNCIVILIZATION -911 mmmmmmmmm.....check out our lyrics...if you want to know anything about me....I've opened my self up, turned myself inside out for all to see... read and listen to the lyrics and you will feel what I feel, see what I see, know what I know...the new web site will have words, thoughts, memories of everything we've ever done before from all of our records... something I think a lot of Biohazard fans (seasoned and unseasoned) will dig!
CJ: Speaking of the Biohazard web page biohazard.com (cheap plug). On your web page it says and I quote "MUSIC IS FOR YOU AND ME... FUCK THE FUCKIN' INDUSTRY." What is your take on the Napster deal?
BG: It all boils down to the almighty greenback! With money comes power, the more money you have, the more powerful you are....I think it was a case of a big fish in a small pond, Napster being the big fish from a small pond that was thrown into an evil ocean full of pollutants, pcb's and toxic waste!
CJ: "Uncivilization". What was it like recording that album, and the initial feeling it gave you with its success?
BG: Uncivilization...more went into the making of this record than anything I have ever accomplished in my life. There is always the ideal goal you have pictured in your mind...there is the reality of what you achieve....and then there usually is some other goal you wish you had strived for.....Finally, I have made the album I have been trying to make my whole life!
CJ: Personally, I, having attended the original Ozzfest's, know other fans may feel the same way as I do about this, I am interested to know your thoughts on being included in the original Ozzfest concept?
BG: An honor...privilege....challenge....
CJ: Turning to the challenging, Biohazard Recently returned from a highly successful tour of Europe. I understand you even write for some music magazine's. Can you provide your fans with some information on this?
BG: I have my own monthly column in a few magazines now....one here in NYC called the Aquarium/Faq, and also a magazine from England called Metal Hammer....check on the new web site for other stories, articles, thoughts of mine....biohazard.com coming soon.
CJ: I've listened to your lyrics, and this question is for me. What does Billy Graziadei believe in?
BG: Myself....and children untainted by civilization!
CJ: And how do you want to be remembered after it is all said and done?
BG: I want to be remembered for being honest and true. I have accomplished more than I ever thought I would...with realistic goals I set for myself.... I am now able to make new ones....mmmmmm.....how about saving humanity.. that sounds really idealistic! Yeah..that's it....saving humanity!
CJ: Any personal feelings or commentary on the government?
BG: Don't be fooled...and don't be food!
CJ: Lastly, (editor's note: the original question was the five famous name game, and the names I listed were, 1. Ozzy Osbourne, 2. Bill Clinton, 3. Brittany Spears, 4. Joey Ramone, and 5. Biohazard. The response I got was very colorful to say the least) here is a journey in to the world of Billy Graziadei.
BG: I'd love to see Bill Clinton blow Ozzy while Brittany Spears banged Clinton in the toilet (ass) while Joey Ramone whipped them all, laughing historically...
